Caffeine is a stimulant. It has the same effects on your baby as it does on you. Accelerated heart-beat and constriction of blood vessels. The constriction of blood flow is the main concern. You want your baby to receive optimal blood flow to and through his/her placenta, umbilical cord and little body during those 9 months of critical development. There have been some very controversial studies done which suggest that caffeine intake in early pregnancy may increase a woman's chance of suffering a miscarriage.
So, the bottom line is, ask you doctor what he/she suggests for you with regard to caffeine intake. Most docs will tell you that one or two caffeinated drinks per day is ok, but to keep caffeine intake to a minimum if possible.
Good luck and be well! : )

Caffeine has long been suspect of causing mal-formations in fetus, and that it may reduce fertility rates.
*** This reports have proved controversial. What is known is that caffeine does causes malformations in rats, when ingested at rates comparable to 70 cups a day for humans. Many other species respond equally to such large amounts of caffeine.
Data is scant, as experimentation on humans is not feasible. In any case moderation in caffeine ingestion seems to be a prudent course for regnant
women. Recent references are Pastore and Savitz, Case-control study of caffeinated beverages and preterm delivery. American Journal of
Epidemiology, Jan 1995.
On men, it has been shown that caffeine reduces rates of sperm motility
which may account for some findings of reduced fertility.

well for starters - if you drink too much it does increase your heartrate.....
but I think the most important reason is moreso that it is a diuretic and therefore de-hydrating. During pregnancy, fluid is especially important since that is how the baby is cushioned inside you... So if you're constantly expelling fluid, your body's gotta pull it from somewhere.....strange but I think its' possible
That would be my guess.

There are no proven reasons why not to have caffeine during pregnancy, but excessive caffeine intake (over 300 mg a day) is linked to miscarriages, low brith weight, and premature labor.
