If you want to have a professional looking site, and not just a free host, then shop around for web hosts. Santa Barbara Web Hosting (SBWH) has very reasonable rates and great service. I use them myself.

If you are a good at web page design than go at it. If not you will need to find a designer to do it for you, and things can start to get expensive.

If all you want is a place for others to see you images on-line, but don't want to get into web page design, then consider a Blog through Blogger or one of the others. There are also many sites just for sharing photos. One of the most popular is Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/)

I guess the first thing to really think about is do you want to mess with maintaining your site or do you want to make photos? A simple website isn't too difficult to pull together if you have a willingness to learn some basic coding OR you have very little money. There are tons of books on how to do it and hundreds of online sites that can offer tips. I like CSS (cascading style sheets). Take a look at www.strangebanana.com. This site is wonderful at showing what CSS can do and the different looks you can achieve. But you have to have the time and willingness to update your site on your own. One of the things to be careful with if someone designs your site for you is updates. If you can't do it on your own then you will have a recurring cost that can get expensive. A lot of photographer sites are done in FLASH. It makes really nice sites but has a stiff learning curve. You can insert small flash movie into a website but you have to know what your doing.

What all this comes down to is do you really want to take the time and effort to create a site from scratch or pay someone to do it for you. The time it takes to make the site, fix the bugs and update it removes a large chunk of shooting time. Someone who does it every day and keeps up with the trends of site design can take that load off your shoulders but at a price.

Good Luck

First get a free hosting for you site, try freewebs or Yahoo! I have Lycos sites but they are so small to work in didn't like it much. Each host will offer free formatting, so you don't need to know my html, you can, if you read their instructions insert all of your favorite photos and any text you want to add, also you can have multiple pages. Good Luck, I have 253 sites now, as I am an on-line entrepreneur. You can use any of the many wonderful photo storage sites to keep your portfolio, that might be easier for you.

I guess the question should be how much are you willing to spend? www.bravenet.com has free webhosting and website for you to start, but please look into your own domain name. GEOCITIES does free things as well.
