It is important for your sister to have a letter from your grandson's parents authorizing her to take him for a visit. Ensure that you have dates listed in the letter for when she is authorized to travel with your grandson and exactly where she is authorized to travel (specific cities, places in Canada would be good). Also include in the letter, authorization for your sister to get medical treatment for your grandson if required. If you (or someone else) is the legal guardian of your grandson, that person needs to write the letter. It would be best if you could get the letter notarized also. Notary publics are available in many places, including some banks.

In addition to the letter authorizing travel, your sister should have a copy of your grandson's birth certificate, and if at all possible, his passport.

Lastly, insure that the legal guardians of your grandson are available the day of travel by cellphone, in case they need to be reached in an emergency.

Other than that, have a great time!

His birth certificate
If the other father is not also traveling with them:
- Divorce decree or other court order showing she has sole custody
- Letter from the father authorizing the trip.
- If the father has died, a copy of the death certificate.

ask her for a reason
one might be that she enjoys your son's company and thinks that he will enjoy the trip. gives you a chance to relax and do something on your own perhaps.
