The conditions of his probation determines pretty much as to what he can and cannot do while on probation. Is his probation supervised or un-supervised that too determines what he can do!
Supervised Active Probation means the District Courts probation officers have regular contact with him to make sure he complies with the court’s conditions at the time of sentencing. Conditions are usually included and one of his conditions is not leaving the State that he live in.
Other conditions could include such things as non use of drugs or alcohol and he could be required to have treatment, commit no other criminal offenses during his probation, and reporting to his probation officer on a regular basis. If he break any of these conditions,it means that a bench warrant will be issued and he will be arrested where ever he's discovered.

As far as I know, if your friend is on probation for a year and a half, he can't leave the State for a year and a half without permission from his parole officer. If he does, he'll have to go back to jail for the remainder of his sentence.

He would get violated, he can leave the state but he will have to petition the court to do so. He also must have a reason for leaving the state not something trivial like i want to go to six flags or something. The courts as long as he is doing ok on probation will allow him to go.

Not leaving the state is a condition of his parole terms. He can only leave the state with the permission of his probation officer.
If he gets caught going out of state, he could be sent back to finish out the original sentance.
