For cutting the ends off long hair it is necessary to have a pair of very sharp scissors. I assume you are on your own, so take the hair at the back of the neck as low as you can manage and hold it firmly. Bring the hair to the front holding it firmly and bind it with ribbon very tightly. Very carefully bring the pony to the front, not allowing slippage. bind the hair again lower down again no slippage.
you can now cut across the ends with a straight cut and all of the hair will fall level afterwards.

i cut my own hair sometimes - wen i feel like funkying it up a little bit, with more layers.
it takes practise like everything else so if you want to cut it 2/3 inches off, then start of, at first, by tring to cut it of half an inch and if you think it looks okay, go from there and cut a bit more, then a bit more etc etc.
also dont cut on completely wet hair, because it will look different when dried, only proffessionals can work with wet cut, cuz they have been trained to visuallise it when dry, plus they have experience.
scissors should be sharp, make sure hair is dry to almost dry, comb out hair but when cutting use your fingers to hold hair in between fore-finger and mid-finger. you have more control this way.
take one side of your head. work from the back - hair at the back of your neck and from there go to the front. then do the other side following the side you have done.
it looks better if when you are cutting you make layers (if there are imperfections, it is less noticeable) instead of poker horizontal straight cut.
but afterwards you should ask a friend if the back is ok, and if not ask for them to neaten it.
some hairdressers have adverts from time to time asking for hair models; for them to practice on. normally on a wednesday or thursday. this is a good opportunity to get a haircut at a fraction of the price - but you should know that the person who will be cutting your hair is a 'newbee' who is new to hairdressing thus why they need ppl to pratice on. so dont go in there wanting a funky restyle (you should ask a pro to do that, to avoid dissapointment) but if it is just for cutting 2/3 inches off (keeping your current style) then it'll be fine. ive had it done loads of times and only had to pay £3-4 ! which is great. so if you have tht in your eare near where you live then i suggest go for that.
all the best

If your hair is layered, you can brush it all forward leaning over, and then hold it up into a pony tail, be sure it is centered on the top of your head. Then cut off about two inches of the pony tail. and let it down and brush. BUT if your hair is one length this method will not work, because you will now have layers.
If your hair is one length you can part it down the center and put half on each side of your head, and trim two inches off each side but keeping in mind to cut a little more off the hair that comes from the back as when it is back in position, it will be longer, since you are pulling it forward. You will still need someone to just trim the ends to be sure it is straight. I still think you should get it done by someone, but Good Luck.

I do my own hair all the time......
just make sure you do it in a garden or bathroom as it flies everywhere....
make a parting in the back of your head so you have equal amounts on both sides - then start from the back bits
take a bit off - then use that as the length you want
and take more hair and cut it to the same level
make sure you streach the hair away from your body so you are really getting the same lenght for all the strands
it's actually easy!!!!
good luck!

Please don't!!! One of the very first things I learned going into beauty school is "Never try to cut your own hair. No matter how good 'you' are at cutting someone else's hair 'you' will never be able to cut your own." If you are short on $$$, try going to a beauty college...They are inexpensive and the students are under supervision of licensed cosmeticians. Sometimes they may do your hair for free if they can use you as a hair model

Best to let someone else do it, but if you must do it yourself....
Get it wet then pat it a bit to stop drips. Bend over forwards, and throw your hair towards the floor. Brush or comb it straight. If you can see the ends, simply cut it straight across!
Good luck. Send me a pic when you are done.....

I hate to say it, but you really shouldn't do it yourself. Go to Supercuts, it is $8.
The biggest problem is that you need SUPER sharp scissors to avoid creating more split ends, and they keep theirs very sharp.
If you cut it yourself, it will look decent at first (IF You manage to get it even) but you will quickly get the straggles again.
If you insist on a home cut, wash it, brush it out, sit in a tall chair and ask a friend to do it to make sure it is even. Good luck!

Usually, which too long for me. I think it depends on the guy as well as his face though. Certain guys can pull off long hair and other folks can't.
