As a parent of four my parenting style comes from a variety of sources. My parents, my personal experiences, the wisdom elders and sometimes just being lucky.

Yes. Sometimes our parents handle situations the way their parents did,and it may not have been the best way.The result being generational. We as parents have to re-evaluate our childhood, and address any issues we may have with the way we were raised. To not do so may cause those same issues to be manifested in our children.Often times mistakes are made, but we don't realize it until the damage has already been done.It is important to change things that caused issues in our lives,so as not to pass those same issues on to our children.Someone has to break the cycle........I will be that person in my family. My parents are really hard nosed, stern, and strict. It has allowed me to be a strong woman, but I think there are better ways to make your child just as strong without emotionally abusing them.I am sure that my parents are oblivious to the damage they caused to my self esteem, but as I became a woman, wife, and mother I dealt with those issues and can now do things a little differently with my daughter. All parents want the best for their children. They just don't know how to change what they learned and perceived from their parents.

when it comes down to we all pick up something from our parents, whether it be how they used to put us to sleep or the way they ate at the dinner table. Naturally we do not realize it until that moment where we are forced to ask our self's? Did I just do what I think I did? It's no secret that if you are subjected to a certain atmosphere you are bound to pick up something from your surrounding environment, however that does not mean that what you are around makes you the person you are inside, its just something that we can't control or should I say haven't found the answer.

My take on this is yes and no. My great-grandmother abused my grandmother, but my grandmother did not abuse my mother. My mother abused me and my siblings. I do not abuse my children. I pray daily that it skips my daughters genes. It may also help that she is forbiddon from association with her grandmother because of what the woman did to us prior.
