True" believers would obviously feel closer to God if they got redemption, but on the other hand, others(like me), might use the "act" of redemption for other purposes. You know, they try to cover up their guilt, or do so in the hope that they will be rewarded with a favor from the Divine.
This would obviously bring one closer to ones own natural vanity.
