It can't be. I have no religion but I am a very conscientious person. Religions help to dampen people's personal consciences by convincing people that right and wrong are based on codes of behaviour outside of our own hearts. People will deafen themselves to the sounds of their own consciences if their religion tells them to do so.

Since the definition of religion is>>> belief, teachings... then I'd say that it is an encounter (knowledge, understanding) that our own mind comes to a conclusion of.

Of course it is. It's brainwashing, pure and simple.
Ask a person with brain damage whether they believe in God. Ask someone born in a country with another belief system the same thing. Neither will understand you.
