If you want a pedigree pup you need to contact the rescue group that deals with that breed.
A general dog shelter may get the occasional dog of the breed that you want but if you have any preferance for age or sex you may be waiting for ever.
I don't know if you live in the States or the UK, but the Kennel Club is your first stop; they will ahve the details of the fifferent breed rescue groups.
The advantage of going to breed rescue is that they tend to be both very knowledgeable about the breed and at the same time not blind to its faults or downside.

Are you in the UK? Most breeds have clubs dealing with pedigree rescue. Check out club for the breed you're after and contact them. You'll need to fill in a form then they'll let you know when they have what you are looking for.
Form will include persoonal details (Yours) Also name of your Vet, ask if you've had other dogs and what is your interest in the breed.
Friend of mine got her OES from the OES Club in Scotland. Her dog was 6 months old and an absolute darling!
Best wishes

Look for a breed specific rescue on the net for your state. You can get a very good dog this way. You will not receive akc papers with these dogs. They will be spayed/neutered.

If you go to Craigslist.org, and look for your state and city on the right side of the page, usually there are people who can no longer care for their pets, sometimes purebred ones, and are trying to find them good homes (sometimes they include the remainder of their supplies too). This is a good option, because you can learn about the dog's personality from its owner before you sign on with a new dog.

there are loads of breed associations which have rescues needing good homes and they usually have background knowledge of the dogs. Get in touch with kennel club and they will be able to supply you with the associations of breeds that you are interested in. go to www.kennelclub.org.uk

Go to Petfinder.com OR craigslist.com.
We really cannot help you, since we do not know your general location of interest.
