The line that hooks into the base has 8 wires. Solids blue, brown, orange and green with white with the same colored stripes. The wires to hook up to are green, yellow, black and red. Can someone please tell me how to hook the outside line up to the base so that I have a dial tone? Thank You.

You should not have wires to hook up. There should be a telco interface box into which you plug a standard telephone plug and the other end of the cord attached to the plug has the same kind of plug that goes into a standard jack on the phone base.

There are only two wires that carry a standard telephone signal, so either use a tester to see which ones have current or complete a circuit or buy a set of telephone jacks at Radio Shack or a similar source and connect the wires according to the color code to two ends of a standard telephone wire.

As to the telephone base, it does not sound like a standard wiring setup. If the phone is from unknown sources, you may have a problem. It may not be made for the US, or it may be made for a multi-line network.

If it will work with the US setup, you can try connecting each wire at a time to one of the incoming lines and touch the other line to one of the wires in turn. At some point, you will have a dial tone.

You're only working with a few volts DC, so don't worry about getting shocked.

yOU ONLY NEED TWO WIRES TO MAKE THE PHONE WORK IF IT IS A SINGLE LINE COMING INTO THE HOUSE, (1PHONE NUMBER) Sorry about the caps.. Anyway go outside the house to the phone box and see which wires they used for termination. You may need a screw driver to acess this box, You will not get shocked. When you see which wires they used go to the inside and trminate the same wires to the same colors on your phone jack. This should solve the problem. If the wire at the inside phone jack is not the same wire that goes to the outside phone box, than you must follow that wire from the phone jack back to the point where it is tied to the outside wire or terminated to a termination block. You will know a trmination block if you see it. Anyway when you find the wire do the same thing see which colors they used and use the same ones at your inside phone jack. This should not be too difficult. If you continue to have problems call the phone company or a qualified electrician. Get prices from both. This is an easy job and a regular handy man may be your best rout. A neighbor, friend or family member may be of help. The phone company and the electrician are going to have to charge you at least two work hours just to come out and an additional hour to fix the problem. It should take no longer than an hour to resolve this issue and if they claim more have them explain themselves. Good Luck

Sounds like you have a four pair cable that you are trying to connect to a two pair jack. You only need two wires to connect the phone. The four pair cable is made up of a white with blue stripes and a blue wire pair, then an white with orange stripes and an orange wire pair, then white with green stripes and green pair, then white with brown stripes and brown pair. The telephone standard would be to connect the white with blue stripes to the green screw terminal in the jack and connect the blue wire to the red screw terminal in the jack. Of course if whomever connected the wire at the other end did not use the white/blue pair then this will not work. If it does not, try the white/orange pair to the green and red and if that doesn't work try the white/green pair to the green and red then finally the white/brown pair. One of the pairs of wires should work.
