The rehearsal is for practicing what you will do at the wedding. So everyone understands their part.

The dinner is your chance to get everyone together, make sure the wedding party all gets to know each other, and have a good time.

Well, a rehearsal gives you the chance to go over the more technical aspects of the wedding before the actual day, so everyone knows where to go, when to walk, etc. Almost everyone has a rehearsal, and it’s become tradition for everyone involved with the rehearsal, and sometimes other people, to all have dinner together afterwards. Since the rehearsal is usually a night or two before the wedding, it’s kind of a beginning to the celebration. It can be casual or formal, and it’s usually hosted by the groom’s parents. It’s kind of a last chance for everyone to hang out in a more casual setting before the wedding. It’s also when a lot of couples give their attendants their gifts.

The dinner is not that important, however it's your way of thanking your wedding party for being there. Also, the actual rehearsal is important because people will need to know where to stand and who to walk with and how to leave, and which order, and beleive it or not some people need to be TOLD not to walk to quickly and what an appropriate speed would be. It's also the time to work out any kinks there might be. I've actually seen a wedding where the power at the church went out the night before and they couldnt rehearse so during the wedding the bride walked down the aisle with her father, then the preacher started talking and stuff and she thought she'd missed something and was supposed to be standing next to her groom, so she just kind of let go of dad and walked forward and the preacher stopped and said no go back, then after the preacher finished his thing and he said who gives this woman, then he said, now it's time. it just looked bad.

In situations where friends and family are traveling from long distances to attend the wedding rehearsal, the rehearsal dinner is a practical way to feed and thank them for participating. It's also a pleasant way for the two families to get comfortable with each other before the "big day".

In situations where the wedding participants all live nearby and the families are already comfortable with each other, it's not as necessary. Still, it can be fun ...

A *Rehearsal* is to make sure that everyone knows what to do.

A *Rehearsal Dinner* is a way for the wedding party to get together the day befoer the wedding. It's also a nice way to honor those who have been there for you and who have taken time out of their lives to be a part of your wedding.

the brides family usually pays for the wedding and reception and the grooms family pays for the rehearsal dinner its a way for them to feel like they are contributing more than just their son. also so many times there are people from out of town that have never met this is a good time to meet everyone so you feel more relaxed at the reception

So that everone in the wedding party knows what they are to do and where they are to be. The dinner is served after rehearsing as a thank you I guess.

Its a reward for showing up for rehearsal. Reheasal= practice
Practice= perfection( that's the theory at least). Plus its food and drinks on someone else's dime.

It's a meet everybody deal so that on the actual wedding when everyone else is there, all the key people know who each other are.
