someone close to me has just been given an adult caution by the court for dealing. wanted to know what it involves etc

it basically means if he is caught dealing again it will be brought up in court and he will be charged with it

Wher was that, UK or USA or elsewhere, it would be very nice if those asking the questions of this sort put that sort of information as the answers can be totally different. In the UK, a person can be offered and accept a caution for some offences, basically they don't have to go to court, BUT the caution does remain on record, and classes as a criminal conviction in some circumstances, eg in a police record check for working with children. If you didn't do anything wrong, then you should argue the point in open court.

As far as I understand it, it is like a final warning and stays with you for 5 years. If you commit another offence during that time, the offence for which you were cautioned will be considered when deciding how to deal with the second offence!!
Anyway this should have been explained to your friend when he/she received the caution and it should have been ensured that he/she understood what it meant.

It means he has admitted the offence of dealing, but is not going to be given a more onerous sentence on this occasion. He has been very lucky, and can expect much more severe sentencing if he comes before the court again.

Dealing? what was he dealing? smack, weed, go, coke, pills, cards, in sex, in what? What ever it was I think it is a great idea, I love it! Dig it, after a dozen cautions, maybe then you could get busted, yeah that's it; that's the Ticket!
