My car was destroyed due to arson but a junker was able to take the car because everything was salvageable under the hood (motor, radiator, etc.) but they never took the title. What should I do to ensure I am covering my behind so that some kind of VIN# scam doesnt come back and haunt me??

Well for one make sure you have a bill of sale signed and dated. Even if you just gave it to the junker. Also contact your DMV title ppl. and see what u need to do. I do think u should sign over the title and let it be in his name that way the car no longer has ur name on the title. As for vin scam I doubt ne thing will happen but, just get the title taken care of.

It might depend on the state you are in (state of confusion?)!

In California you need to complete a release of liability as completely as possible. The form will say that you can mail it, but BRING IT IN to the DMV, and have the clerk behind the counter stamp it with todays date, and then ask for a copy. They might not be willing to copy it (our office will). If they won't, then fill out 2 copies: one for them and one for you, and make sure they stamp both of them. This is your official proof that you have sold or given away the vehicle.

Hope this helps.

Your Department of Licensing or DMV should have a form to report the sale. Also, you should sign over the title and give it to the junk yard.
