If there are no sidewalks, then you are supposed to walk on the left side of the street, with traffic on your side facing you, not going away from you.

Really you are supposed to walk against traffic when no sidewalk is available. That way you can see if there are cars coming at you. When you bike you follow street laws and ride with traffic. Most places it doesn't matter which side of the street you walk on if there is sidewalk provided. I do know that many towns have ordinances that require you to walk on a sidewalk when one is provided.

If there are sidewalks, then you can walk on whichever side of the street you prefer. If not, then it's a little bit safer to walk on the left side. That way, you can see cars coming on your side instead of them coming up behind you. It make it easier to stay out of the way.

In countries where they drive on the left, like Britain, Japan and India, the advice is the opposite, of course.

There are no rules for this. One thought is to walk on the side facing traffic in order to see a car coming, but that is primarily for when you have to be in the roadway with the cars.

Here's a general rule of safety: If you are on the sidewalk, it doesn't matter. If there is no sidewalk, you should walk against the traffic, so you can see the cars and the cars can see you. Have a safe walk.
