Given your height and weight, it doesn't sound as though you are overweight. Consult your doctor before you start a diet and exercise regimen. Perhaps if you feel your abs are flabby, you may need to do some ab work. Also, if you use resistance training as a part of your exercise program, the increase in muscle mass will burn more calories even at rest and you should see some of the flab just disappear. Don't worry about what the scale says, scales rarely give one the whole picture.

Rather think in terms of "Am I fit? Am I healthy? Do I look the way I want? Can I wear the clothes that I want to wear?"

Two things NOT to do:
Do NOT overtrain. If you overwork your body, it will respond with inflammation, water retention, soreness, and ultimately, injury.

Also, do NOT overly restrict your calories. Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet of natural foods...produce, meats, and some fats from dairy sources. Avoid the aisles in your grocery store as that's where all the processed foods are...and they can completely derail your efforts to get healthy. Excessively restricting calories will make your body cling desperately to every calorie it has by slowing down your metabolism.

Things to DO:

Basically, what I do is I eat two apples a day: one before lunch and one before dinner. The apples are full of nutrition and fiber, which fills me up and makes me less likely to overconsume fatty foods and/or snacks between meals.

I also try to get in two salads a day: like the apples, one at lunch and one at dinner. The salads are also quite filling and healthy. I AVOID fat-laden salad dressings such as bleu cheese; I also avoid putting croutons and/or cheese in my salads. Rather, I prefer to use either Italian dressing or something like a basalmic vinegrette...while these may contain more fat than some of the highly processed, low-cal dressings, the vinegrettes and the Italian dressings typically have much more flavour, and they have monosaturated fat in the form of Olive Oil, which is quite good for you.

Also, be patient and forgiving. It takes time to become fit and retrain your way of living into a healthier pattern.

Be forgiving: you will "go off the wagon" from time to time. Get back "on the wagon" as soon as you can. It's not a failure to make a mistake; it's only a failure if you give up.

I have the same problem and what I have found to work is cardio, it uses the fat. You can do sit ups all day and your muscles will get firm but it won't get rid of the fatty tissue. And just remember that muscle is denser than fat so if you build more muscle and lose more fat your weight may remain the same

You aren't fat. And your diet will work if you stick to it and have a regular exercise routine. Cutting calories without exercising works only rarely and temporarily. If you want long-lasting results, find a routine that works for you. You don't necessarily have to cut out everything you like, just the empty calories. It's about moderation. Good luck.

111 is within the normal weight range for someone who is 5'1''.

Starving yourself is not the way to lose weight. You need to eat the correct foods in the correct portion sizes and exercize.

Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

BMI = weight in kgs /ht squared (in mts)

for one thing, ive got lots of fats at my stomach area, but my bmi is aceptable. so the bmi thingy is not really accurate. some ppl are just super tall, and some may be fatless and have lots of muscles, but they're really short. so their bmi may show tt they're overweight, but in fact, they cant be any fitter. =)
