Actually its not. Stealing is still, stealing, be it a penny or a million dollars. Murdering is a sin, perhaps of a greater nature, but it is remains a sin.
Sin is sin and all sin is wrong. No sin can be justified. Any Christian who says picking up a penny off a sidewalk is stealing has lost contact with his or her head.
A lost penny is a penny no one is going to reclaim and I promise - no one has ever retired comfortably as a rich man by picking a lost penny from a sidewalk, or yard.
Now if you find that penny in someone's house in a piggy bank - THEN we have a problem.
Killing a child? How is murdering a child related to stealing a penny?

The two acts are not of the same severity, of course. Traditional Christian belief is that any sin, whether stealing a penny or murdering a child is a result of evil and its influence in the world. I think that in spite of our best intentions, we are always inclined to sin, but we can find strength to resist by trusting in God.

Is like saying 'taking a candy out of a child's hand"
My family always told me that one cent is worth more than a billion dollar, so you see taking or stealing a penny, is like killing a child, because that penny could have been saved to help members of the family.
Weird huh?

One has to take the point-of-view that they have before one answers this question. That is very hard to do for it is such a blatantly stupid statement. Nevertheless: Sin is sin. It detracts from the world and it detracts from you. All sin does this.
Now, define sin.
I propose this: If you believe it is wrong, it is a sin for, I believe that sin is inside one's self. We all sin, and we all know when we are sinning; be honest with yourself about it. In this sense, murdering a child and stealing a penny is the same, if you think they are both sinful things to do. Punishment and guilt, they are the measures of severity of sin I think.

Which Christians? Catholics? Evangelists? Baptists? Mormons? Jehovah Witnesses? The list goes on.
Are you refering to the fact that we need to be "perfect" to "go to heaven"?
We need to be perfected BY christ of all of our sins through his attoning blood. If someone is unrepentant they may not "go to heaven" (using traditional christian lingo).
Most christians believe in a just god (e.g. we'll be punished for sins....big sins = big punishment) and a god of mercy (big sins require more mercy).
As far as a penny vs murdering....you'll get very few christians to agree with you.

Religious groups are all group conscious but some are very powerful in controlling speech. The strong churches demand and get absolute obedience to speech and to all the other activities some of which must never be spoken of in the common vocabulary. If you want to belong and share the fruits you must do as the group does.

I don't know why so many Christians are denying this. I've seen it dozens of times on Y!A R&S: "All sins are equal in the eyes of the Lord". I find it an amazingly misguided, and fatalistic, logic that can be reduced to this:
All of us are sinners. Regardless of our sins, we can be absolved through redemption in Jesus Christ.
That's not the kind of moral code I'd like to subscribe to.

Property crimes have always been the most important to man. As man began to leave his nomadic existence behind and settle down, he began to acquire "stuff" that he needed to help him survive being in only one place. Children as a labor force, a wife as the creator of that labor force, land that he tilled for food, animals that he kept foir clothing and food and so forth. As such, theft of these things became increasingly important since it endengered the existence of one man if he was permanently deprived by another.
You should know that our modern laws have evolved out of crimes of property.........even murder....
