Show her her place right away! It could be a crate or a doggy bed. Take a toy with you when you go to pick her up, preferably a soft toy! Give her the toy while you are at the breeder's (Rescue centre whatever) while you settle things about purchase/adoption. Let he sniff the toy and praise her when she shows an interest in it. Let her keep the toy on the way home. At bedtime, when you want her to go to bed, take the toy with her so she will not feel too lonely.

Of course you'll want to spend lots of time with her and to know she is praised, cuddled and well looked after will help her greatly!

Having said that ... Let her have a grand tour of the house so she can have a good sniff about and know what's what! Same thing with the garden or yard. And!!! Do show her the place you have set as doggy toilet! So she can learn fast to use it.

Congratulations! Best of luck to you and dog

Congratulations! I say, all of the above, plus a first-aid kit! Make sure you have all of the basics in it, as well as some Benadryl (1 mg per pound of dog) and Aspirin. (Only Aspirin, not tylenol or advil or anything else...) This is a very important accessory for any puppy or dog. You won't be sorry you spent the money on it.

Others had wonderful advice on making the puppy comfortable, so that's all I wanted to add. Good luck to you!

DOG: crate train her. (It doesnt mean stick her in the crate all day) She needs 2 learn that the crate isn't a punishment. Stay with her all day every day for 2 weeks, buy a large crate, put a couple of chew toys ( I recommend chew treats with meat flavor in the middle) and something that smells like you, ( a shirt, old jeans, a towel or blanket) buy balls (!!!) and she will probably pee to mark her territory even if she is house trained, so wipe it up and then scrub that spot with a mixture of vinegar and water so she doesnt smell it and pee again. take her outside often and give her a tour of the house!
PUPPY: do the same thng with vnegar and water when sshe pees and dont scold her at first cuz she wont understand. Crate train her and make a snuggly out of a flat sheet and carry her around in it at least once a day for 2 weeks so u can bond. at night place something that smells lke u in her crate and calmly tell her o. she'll figure out that ur not abandoning her. DO NOT LET HER OUT OF HER CRATE IF SHE CRIES OR ELSE SHE WILL NEVER STOP CRYING!!

research the breed. some breeds enjoy cave like dwelling areas. this is true with my dog, a min. pincher. If this is the case, a dog cage covered with a blanket serves well. My dog also will make nest like dwelling with blankets and pillows on my bed. I was told that this behavior is normal for her breed. i've never had this with other dogs i've had, so make sure to do ur research. this way u can help ur puppy feel the most comfortable in its new home.

It seemed kind of mean to me at first, but a good crate or kennel for them to use as a bed or a place to be when you aren't home is the best thing to make a dog feel comfortable in your home. They like the security of a small place that is all their own. Don't go in their crate with them, take things away from them in their crates or use it as a punishment. It should be a safe place for them to go when they need that security.

If it's a puppy it will miss its mother, so make sure it has a fluffly tou or that is lies next to you to feel warmth. Let it run around and sniff things out. But don't treat it like a human or baby talk to it-you need to express dominance, but that means just have a strong voice and giving it lots of praise.

It is important to just spend time with the dog this will make it easier for them. Also it is a good idea to take them around the property and show them the border.

Make sure the house is nice a quiet.

Make sure she has a place to run to in the house, but still maintain positive control. Never chase her, but as soon as she runs away, let her come to you when she feels better.

first you should spend a lot of time with it and communicate to your dog what you approve of and what is not okay. and one of the best things to do for animals of all sizes is to cradle him/her. have your dog in between your legs, with all paws in the air, and scratch its stomach until after its tail is relaxed. this is saying to your dog"I'll take care of you, but i am the Alfa male"
