The ear is actually designed to get rid of wax and debris on its own, so there's no need to "deep clean," but I'd say still use a q-tip just around the outside of the ear canal if you want to.
If you have excessive cerumen (wax) an audiologist or other doctor can do a cleaning, or there are over-the-counter items. (Ask the pharmacist.)

First of all, I just want to say that q-tips are not dangerous; it's how we use them that poses the threat. Most times, when we use q-tips, we insert them too far into the ear which after repeated insertion can eventually damge our inner ear. Doctors recommend we don't use q-tips simply becuase we might not know where to stop. Q-tips should be used only on the outer ear; without actually pushing it down the ear canal. Buildup of Wax isusually evident here and if not cleaned may lead to an infection, We just need to "scoop" up this wax. That way, you won't be inserting the q-tip into your ear canal.
An alternative to q-tips is a damp rag, NOT DRIPPING WET. A warm damp rag is perfectly fine once we don't repeat the mistake we make with q-tips and try to insert them dep into our ear canal.
REMEMBER to clean behind the ears too =D

Ear candles: These hollow, fabric-wrapped candles are an alternative to Q-tips. Lie on your side, have a friend place the candle in your ear and light it, and the heat will gently draw wax build-up from your ear canal. When used correctly, ear candles are effective, and the warmth is soothing. Problem is, the FDA is considering snuffing out sales of the wax sticks altogether (it has already shut down two companies) because of concerns about safety and effectiveness. Ear candles are sold at People's Food Co-op (3029 SE 21st Ave., 232-9051). (LB)

They always do that! Use them anyway. You can bet they do! That's like something everybody says but nobody does. We need to quit that charade. May as well go around telling people to quit masturbating. Get over it. Everybody does it anyway.
