A style of Karate started by Gichin Funakoshi back before world war 2. He was the first to take Karate off of Okinawa and main stream it.
We have Karate in all styles all over the world because of him.
I have read that Shotokan was the name of his garden and his students named the style after it to honor him. (while he was still alive)
