Don't listen to Mike, He is sadly misinformed.
If he thought about what he said for a a minute he would notice that the majority by far of dogs in the shelters are mutts. what does that tell you?? It isn't the breeders that are causing the problems as breeders don't breed mutts.
It is the breeders and only the Breeders that strive for the ultimate health and temperament of dogs.
The people with the idea that you have a problem are pure and simply ignorant they think it is actually the responsible people in society whom should pay for others mistakes. As with other aspects in life they don't think the people who cause the problem should be held accountable thus they can pass the problem on to you.

I'm in the U.S. so I don't know the link to the Canadian Kennel Club's website. Here, we'd check out www.akc.com - they have info on all the breeds and links to the individual breed clubs. The best breeders are going to be members of a club, promoting quality dogs. Be wary of anyone who is willing to ship you a puppy sight-unseen. A good breeder should ask YOU a bunch of questions, to make sure their pup is getting a good home. If they don't care about the pup's immediate welfare, they sure won't care a week later if he's dying from distemper or parvo and you want your money back!

By asking for good breeders, you obviously already know a lot - but I'll include my standard rant for the other people who will just tell you to go to a pet store! Whatever breed of puppy you decide on DON'T go to a pet shop or buy one off the internet!!!! You'll pay top dollar for what is usually a poor quality puppy mill dog. And you'll be supporting one of the cruelest industries in the country. The breeding animals are often kept in deplorable conditions - never let out of their small wire-bottomed cages. They probably haven't been vaccinated against contagious diseases or tested for any health or temperament problems or genetic diseases - that costs money and cuts into their profits. A female is often bred every time she comes into heat. When her poor little body can't take it any more, she is often clubbed in the head and tossed into a dumpster or an open ditch. Most puppy mills ship their pups to pet stores at wholesale prices and many pups die before they even get there.

These so-called "breeders" have now figured out that they can use the internet to ship a dog directly to the customer and thus make more money by cutting out the middleman. If you buy a dog from out of state (or another province), good luck getting your money back if there's something wrong with the pup. These people count on you becoming instantly attached to the poor little guy and being willing to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars at the vet to treat whatever is wrong with him.

Good breeders DON'T breed mutts. That's all these so-called "designer dogs" like malti-poos and cocker-poos are. Most of them DO come from puppy mills or backyard breeders who don't know what they're doing. You're playing genetic roulette - you might get a good dog, you might not.

For every puppy born, three die in shelters. There are too many dogs out there and not enough homes for them all. Getting a dog from a breeder means you are a dog hater, not a dog lover. Dog breeding is selfish, cruel and wrong on a host of fronts. If you want a dog, go to your local shelter and pick one out.

If you are immoral, and the above reason doesn't work on you, then try a biologic one. Dog breeding has been going on for so long, and there are so few registered breeders that the genetic diversity of these animals is quite small. This leads to behavioral and mental problems, especially in the rarer breeds. By buying from a breeder, you are condoning that practice.

I hope you make the right decision and get your dog from a shelter.

There is a breeder in Stettler, Alberta. The breeds are Bichons, Shih Tzus, and Poodles. They are called "Wild Rose Country Puppies". (403) 742-6675 (Susan Guilbault).

There is a breeder in Salmon Arm, BC. They have CKC Reg'd Yorkshire Terriers. (250) 833-0331 (Art & Marita Parker).

Hope that helps some.

Try the AKC (american Kennel Club) They should have a list of breeds and breeders. I would think they have a link or some sort of information on blood lines for many type of dogs that extends into Canada.

www.akc.org
Good luck, and happy hunting
