Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is secreted by the parietal cells lining the stomach in order to kill bacteria and aid digestion. The OVERPRODUCTION of HCl is associated with diseases such as 'gastric reflux' and 'peptic ulcers'. This overproduction is often caused by unhealthy life styles such as alcohol, cigarettes, and over eating. The term 'acid stomach' is a phrase coined by the pharmaceutical industry. And calling 'acid stomach' a disease is an abuse of terminology to scare people into buying more of their products. By the way, hydrochloric acid ionizes with water ( HCl + H2O == H30+ + Cl- ).

It is a disease because the body is making too much acid. This acid can eat away your esphogus and the valve. I had too much acid and it ate 2 1/2 inches of my espohogus and I had to have a new valve made from the lining of my stomach.

Yes, your body does contain acids which help to break down the food, but when you have too much acid, this causes
Acid Reflux Disease which will erode your esophagus.

Have a lovely rest of the day.

The extent to which acid burns through things depends on how concentrated it is. No doubt you have seen that concentrated hydrochloric acid burns through things in the lab quite easily. However if you dilute it, then it will not burn through things so much, although it will still burn them more slowly. Same applies to your stomach - puke will burn through things, but it's less concentrated than the jar of hydrochloric acid you saw in the lab.

Yes there is hydrochloric (HCIO3)acid in your stomach.I think pH is 2-3 or something which is very acidic, I can not remember. If your stomach is over-producing this kind of acid, it harms your stomach. You should take some pills to higher the pH

No it doesn't contain HCl, it contains gastric acids, which is actually strong enough to burn asphalt. And it is only a disease when you have an excess of this acid produced and some gets pushed up into your esophogus of burns the lining of it. That's where the problem lies.

To the dude that said it doesn't contain HCl.. it kinda does, it's a part of the gastric acids. The overproduction of these acids can "eat" away at the gastric lining and cause ulcers and even cancer if the condition significantly worsens.
