Ali, or Cassius Clay as he was known at the time, won an Olympic Gold Metal in 1960 in Rome when he won the light heavyweight division at the games. Rumor had it that he tossed the gold metal into the Ohio river as a "newsworthy, attention getting" protest for the way African-Americans were being treated in America. It's hard for me to believe but it does make for a good story.
