Dogs really enjoy feeling completely comfortable when sleeping and it is impossible if they do not have access to a soft place or if their bed is to lumpy etc. Before laying down, a lot of dogs turn around in circles in order to get rid of any protuberances or lumps on their bed.

I have heeard that it is a leftover instinct from when dogs were wild. they would turn around several times to atrample down tleaf matter or other debris ( making a bed for themselves) before sitting down or resting.

As Mama would say, this is just born in them. This behavior is what all dogs do. They do this because when they are outside, when they turn around three times, this flattens the grass and creates a little cushion for them to lie on.

He's making a bed, trampling down a soft spot for him to lay. It's a biological leftover from when dogs were still wild animals. Wolves and coyotes do this too.

I heard it has something to do with coolness/comfort. A dog will spin around feeling how cool/comfortable the floor is so that he can seat his body in the most advantageous position.

I had heard that it's because of their "nest" building instinct. Sometimes they scratch also.
