They are not the same language but are partially mutually intelligible. Actually, a Portuguese speaker would have better understanding of a Spanish speaker than the other way around..

An interesting dialect is Galician spoken in NW Spain- it is closer to Portuguese than it is to Castillian Spanish, but can be understood by both quite easily.
