Basic canine behavior teaches us that a "female alpha" is in charge with the male Alpha backing her up. In my 40+ years with dogs, males are generally beta, more loving, more devoted, and less defensive...unless humans have abused them to the point of aggression...(ergo dog fighting). Dogs will challenge for food and pack order, but it is not normal or natural for them to fight to the death for anything.A male will back down well before a female will. It's just mother natures way of ensuring survival.

In my experience, the females are much more aggressive than the males, especially if you have two of them together. My males are more affectionate and easy-going. My females are a little more wary of things and quicker to get grumpy. They are more emotionally independent, too.
This is coming from personal experience with many different dogs, of a few different breeds, of both genders. I'm trying to think if there were any exceptions to this rule, but I can't think of any! I was sitting around one day talking to two other dog breeders and we were commenting on how the females were so ornery, just like their human counterparts. (And we were all women...) They agreed with me that the males were better pets, even with kids.
Each gender has its own qualities, but in my opinion, the males are more affectionate, easy to get along with, and with conditioning, will adapt to new dogs easier than females. (My females are more interested in staying on top of the totem pole, running the pack's small details, etc., and seem to direct a lot of attention toward that.) But, my females are almost always easier to train... Go figure.
When people call me to ask for a puppy, they usually know which gender they want, without a doubt. They think that the females are "this" and the males are "that", and that's just what they believe. I invite them over to meet my adult dogs, and when my females ignore them and run of to sniff stuff, while the males are begging for attention and doing tricks and slathering on their charms, there's a polarity switch, and many people have gone home with a male puppy instead. To this day, I've never had anyone regret it.
Good question! You should get a lot of interesting answers!

The only difference I've seen, is male dogs seem to be less cautious of situations. But when it comes to playfulness, that just depends on the individual dog. Gender doesn't really have anything to do with that, just overall personality.

I believe that male dogs are more aggressive than female dogs. Male dogs are very playful and as I said can be very aggressive. Female dogs are quieter and more gentle.

We have three dogs....two female akitas and a male shiba inu. I have had another boy dog before when I was younger. Personally, I have found that female dogs are much sweeter. They seem to want to please you more than the males we've had. But I love them all equally, and it could just have been the breeds we've had. But female dogs are definitely a lot more loving I think.

It depends on the breed.
I had a female doberman who was fearless and very protective and a very assertive dog.
I have had males who were more laid bak that she was.
I have a female weim now and she is pretty assertive and fearless and is wary or strangers. My male likes everybody.
They both love to play and all of my dogs have liked to paly or run.
I think my female weim is maybe a little more intense when hunting that the male. She is so focused when in the field and on a scent trail. Nothing stops her.

Male dogs tend to be into domination, especially over female owners. They feel great as consider themslves top dog! They are harder to train than females because not as compliant and also extremely determined "I'm the man you know".
Females are more gentle by nature, and easier to train as well. They are just as protective as male dogs, and especially for female owners too!
Dogs are all individuals so you may find some male dog who demand to be the owner's baby (Mine for instance) meaning they tolerate visitors, just as long as it means they're not missing out on their cuddles and attention. You can slo find fun mad females. it depends on their individuality!
You'll find that most women owning dogs tend to look upon them as precious creatures they want to nurture, love and enjoy being loved back in a way most people can't (Unconditionally) While male owners look upon dogs as dogs! O they love them dearly too! But they're still referred to as 'The dog'.

I've noticed female dogs tend to be more.. apt to sit with humans, they want to be around people all the time and are clingy, while male dogs tend to be more independent and want to do things themselves. This isn't always the case but just something I noticed with many dogs.

male dogs can typically be more aggressive than female dogs. For young children I would reccommend a female dog, because they are more protective.
