War Bonds were sold during the first and second world wars to help defray the war costs. A much better way than taxation. However at that time patriotism was held at a much higher value. They were similar to today's government US Savings Bonds. As they were backed by the government they were a pretty secure investment, however at the same time, the interest rate was quite low, something like 2 to 3 %. They had maturity dates of something like 5 to 7 years in the future. War Bond Drives were often lead by either by Hollywood Stars at that time or by returning hero's, i.e. Medal of Honor Winners.

a war bond is like a savings bond, you buy it from the government. so lets say you buy a war bond for $200 and they give you a lil piece of paper saying you bought a war bond and when the war is over you give them the paper back and they are suposse to give you $200 back. it was used in WWI and WWII
