To learn the basic moves and strikes, a short time, but armed with this level of skill, you are more of a danger to yourself, than to your opponent. To get proficient at it, where you can defend yourself, a year to two years, depending on your god given talents.

My sensei only started Aikido in his late 20s, and 12 years later, hes already a 3rd Dan. Imo, it depends on how well and fast can u absorb the teachings.
Some ppl r naturally gifted with great body flair that suits the styles easily and if paired with a good set of brain, this type of person can advance to the higher level faster than anyone else.
Some ppl r stiff and need more times practising even a simple task, but if you can go thru the obstacles the feeling is greater bcos you know ur success is hard-fought, and ull be as good as others.
Just plan yourself, in 5 years time, aim to get the first black belt. Ppl usually get it in less than 5 years but u get the idea. Also, dont judge only by belt rankings, bcos ive seen many lower belt students with a greater spirit n understanding. Dont force it, relax and learn it step by step, but dont take it too long, u must set yourself a time limit but within your own reach, when u have confidence grown in you, u can try go to the xtremes sometimes, feel the knocks, the locks, the throws, the pains, it builds up the mental strenght in you.
Good luck.

Depends on how much practiceing you do.
Like anything, the more you put in, the more you get out.
Martial arts is a life style. You can start it whenever. I started Karate as an adult.
As for mastering it? You'll always be learning and growing. No one ever masters an art.

You can start as an adult, no better time than now.
It takes a lifetime to master. It never ends.
Lots of people think it takes a ton of lifetimes to get your kung fu right. As far as being flexible... my Grandmaster is turning 60 and is still as flexible as the young guys like me in their early 20's.
Its a matter of maintaining it, and ALWAYS pushing your self to your limit cause you will stop growing if you dont and your ligaments will tighten with age.
Even if your not flexible or strong...
if your serious and train everyday... you can get "half assed" in two years. and by half assed I mean in the scope of the big picture...
blackbelt should take atleast 4 years to get min... 6-7 is better...
its a 7 year course for our black belts.
Black belt means you are "ready" to go challenge yourself for real.
You have the BASICS of taking care of yourself and learning about your inner self.
the definition of basics comes into debate here.
So that being said...
as quick as you can push yourself there safely.

Learning all depends on the practioner. Unfortunately, most styles these days slow down their learning process. Stretching the learning out for years because they have nothing to offer after Black Belt. Black Belt usally is the end were as it should be the advanced training ( Lower belt / Brown belt levels should be your basics)
