There are enough national museums (Smithsonian, National Gallery, and more) between the White House, Capitol Building, and Washington Monument to keep you busy and fascinated for weeks and weeks.

there is a facility in nearby chantilly, virginia that is operated by the smithsonian's air and space museum adjacent to dulles airport. they house some of the larger aircraft in their exhibit, such as the space shuttle enterprise, an air france concorde, the sr-71 blackbird, and the b-29 enola gay. there are many military and commercial planes, as well as helicopters, gliders, flying wings, spacecraft, missles, rockets, autogiros, and stunt planes. there are many displays as well, like amelia earhart's jumpsuit, space-related toys, and the original model of the mothership created for the movie, close encounters of the third kind. there is an imax theater and a tower that you can observe real airliners in flight as they prepare for landing at the nearby airport. there is a mcdonalds with two different menus, fast food and cafe. it would be a day well spent if you go there. you can drive there directly, or take the shuttle bus from the air and space museum on the mall.

Take the "Monuments by Moonlight" tour--- ask your hotel front desk or google it to get details. It's a bus-driven tour of all the monuments but it doesn;t start till like 10pm, so the monument grounds are a lot quieter, and it's really, really pretty. The Vietnam Memorial is breathtaking after dark. It's a great tour plus you'll get an idea of what things you'd like to go back and spend more time exploring, and where they are, so you'll have your next day planned!

Click below. There is too much to do to list here. Just get on the Metro Train and get off at Smithsonian stop and walk around for the day. Take a digital camera. Many of the attractions are free but do have security screenings. Enjoy it.
