I've used it before, but you only get to choose your flight date and airport - they tell you what flight you'll be on after you pay, so you don't get to choose the time or the airline. It's only worth it if you can be flexible. And it seems the days of cheap flights are gone, at least temporarily. The last few times I've tried priceline, it wasn't nearly the cheapest.
'Name your own price' isn't a special airplane - they book you onto Northwest or United or whomever they can get.

The thing you have to know about Priceline is that it is a trap. You get what they give you for the price you want. These fares are very very restricted. Make sure you READ ALL THE FARE RULES before agreeing to anything. You can not for any reason change these tickets. Airlines will not touch them if there is a problem. They are non-refundable, non-changeable, non-upgradable and you can not earn milage on them if you are a frequent flyer.
After many years in the airline industry, I have seen more people get burned using this site than not. I have seen better fares and more flexible and better schedules directly with the airlines themselves. If you are going to Minnesota, check Sun Country to see if they service your airport, they are a discount airline and their main hub is Minneapolis-St. Paul. Im not sure where you are flying out of, and that makes a difference too as far as price is concerned.
If you want some help finding good fares, shoot me an e-mail. Let me know your departure dates and cities and I will show you how to do better research than just being drawn in by an ad you see on TV.
Some people have luck with Priceline, but the name your own price gives you no options, no flexibility and you have to wait to see if you get it. After being in the industry, this is a site i DO NOT recommend. Saving money can be more hassle than its worth just to shave $50 off of the price tag. Educate yourself, research all of the sites. Go to the airport website that you will be flying to and from to see who services those airports, then check those airlines directly.
Book atleast 30 days in advanced to get the best fares and schedules available. Stay away from weekends if you can, Friday and Sunday are the two most expensive days. The advanced purchases usually break down into 30, 14 and 7 day advanced purchases.
Again, if Priceline, or other sites like it such as Hotwire, Cheap Tickets, Lowestfare.com...all of these "last minute discount websites", is your choice READ THE FINE PRINT before you pay so that you know what you are getting into.

My dad has tried to use it before to book vacation for our family. He said when he did try naming his own price it was always higher than he wanted, which makes me think it's not such a good place, but that's just me.
