I've seen both sides throw out the race card and claim the other side is ignorant while posting/answering questions on illegal immigration. Please explain your position on the issue (I admit I've been on the anti-"illegal" immigration side but am trying to be open-minded) and then explain why your opposition's views are ignorant and/or racist?

neither side is racist. both sides use that epitaph to cloud the issue. neither side is completely right and if they can cloud the issue they can keep people from seeing the weaknesses in their plan.
this immigration thing is about security, both along the border and criminal problems inside the country and being able to support such a number of people with our social systems - its not about race at all.
its not that the USA doesn't accept immigrants, its that we can only accept so many a year and that we need to be able to document them. So, while we strive to make legal immigration better/streamlined, and to strengthen our borders against more illegals, we still have the problem with the illegals that are already here. shipping them back over the border is not only a crass suggestion, but in infeasible one. Do we separate families if we only catch the dad? or de we capture kids at school or in the playground and send them back leaving mothers wondering where their children are? do we start storming houses, demanding people to show proof that they are legal, and if they can't (of which there could be many valid reasons they can't prove it) we ship them out without really knowing? Remember that these people came here chasing the same dream that ALL of our forefathers did. Should we treat them so inhumanely? is throwing every single immigrant back to mexico really going to solve our social problems?
the way to do it is really to first, secure the borders, so that when we do start doing things, it makes a difference. no more unknown crossings, in either direction. Second, we need to cut down on legal immigration for say 5 years or so. Then we need to have some sort of incentive for the illegal immigrants who are already here to proclaim themselves. Once they have they should have to be forced to become citizens within a reasonable amount of time, or be deported. I've heard things like being able to benefit from social programs like welfare or foodstamps, or getting tax breaks; i don't know what the incentive should be, but these are some ideas that have been floated. Now this looks like a reward for getting here illegally, and maybe it is, but their reward is not nearly as great as the government's. That being mainly that we now know the demographics of an area, when these people work they will pay taxes, they will be identifiable and traceable through driver's licenses, and thus less able to avoid capture or penalty when they do commit crimes. the gov't will be able to handle any emergency situation better if they know how many people are really in an area. they will know what resources and how many will be necessary should an area need support in some way. there are so many possible benefits for the gov't to know that these people are here, that it would take up much too much space to list try to list them all here.
Suffice it to say, that this is an important issue that is not the least bit about race, except to the ignorant populace who can't or won't use their brains and see beyond the facade the political parties have constructed in their attacks upon one another.

The key word in your question is 'ignorant'. Most people think this is a negative word, but in truth only means uneducated. While many people confuse the words 'stupid' & 'ignorant' there is a big difference.

Both sides of both issues have people who fall into both groups!

Illegal immigration has nothing to do with race. There are illegal immigrates from many countries that include many races, it's only the Mexican boarder that is hitting the news.

Illegal immigration is bad. Not only for the tax payers but for the immigrant themselves. Many illegal, live in poor conditions, are abused, paid poor wages, and have no legal protection to speak of. This is not a quality life style.

On the other hand, if people didn't hire illegal workers, they wouldn't come in such large numbers. Knowing that they can obtain work that pays more than they can make in their own country is much like the old metaphor... If you put a steak in front of a hungry dog, he will eat it.

Think about it... if your family was hungry, and you had a chance to improve their quality of life... wouldn't you do it? Which do you think is worse... the home grown drug dealer or thief or the illegal immigrant who works for a living?

The problem is large and there is no easy fix. Almost our entire country has roots to an immigrate, the only difference is how one enters the country. It shouldn't matter what race or country the person is from, but the system of how they enter.

To put it bluntly there are a lot of jobs that need to be filled that our citizens simply refuse to do. This has created a void that illegal workers filled. A better system for green cards, would be the easiest way to fill the bill. Of course that means that these employers would have to start paying legal wages! A legal worker would pay taxes, and could contribute to the community. Where keeping it illegal, simply keeps things underground opening the door for problems.

As to the race issue, this has been going on for generations. Every group of people here has received their fair share of slander. You don't have to look far to find racial comments about whites, blacks, latino, Polish, Puerto Rican, Italian, Arab, Haitian ...

While it's a general statement and not all people fall into this, a perfect example is South Florida. There you have white, african american, cuban and haitian, with none of them consider the other one equal.

The bottom line, is our county is too large to close the boarders up completely. There will always be a way for illegal entry. Our best defense, will have to start in our own back yards... Don't put the bird feeder out, unless you want birds.

I'm against illegal immigration and race has nothing to do with it. It is illegal and we did not sufficiently try to stop it. We suffer insane warning messages on consumer products because stupid people did stupid stuff, then got hurt and sued the maker of the product. The makers of the products lost because they did not sufficiently safeguard the public safety and were therefore liable. We've got modern-day slave traders hauling truckloads of people that came into this country without permission (try going the other way and get jobs in those other lands and see how fast they slap you into jail, and not the comparatively pristine prisons we have), and these slave traders sometimes abandon their cargo without the slightest concern. My supposed racism for opposing this is poles apart from the reality.

The American Indians had a long and established, and in many ways comfortable, existence. We (there is a tribal card and Bureau of Indian Affairs card in my wallet, I'm sitting on it as I write) didn't stop the illegal immigration that came upon us and now whole tribes are lost forever and other once-proud people are obscure footnotes in our country today. It didn't matter what country they came from or what language they spoke, they didn't belong here and soon crowded out those who did. Race isn't the issue, illegal immigration is. What part of illegal don't you understand?

My thoughts: America is a wonderful country full of opportunities. If you wish to come over here and try to make a life for yourself, be prepared to do so legally. If you want us to treat you as citizens and give you fair rights as a citizen, you need to abide by the law. If you are going to travel all the way over here illegally just so you can work illegally and try to reap the benefits of our nation without having to give anything back, you need to go home. We don't have room for everyone within our borders. If you really want a shot, work for it.

I don't think that my views are ignorant or racist at all. I think they are fair. Are people really pro-illegal immigration? It's not fair to the people born here that people should cross the border illegally and then expect to be given a job, a home, and a place in society. I understand many people come from poor living conditions, but there are many people with poor living conditions that are already here. What makes illegal aliens more important?

Illegal immigration is illegal, I don't see how it is racist. I am not just against illegal immigration from Mexico, I am against everyone who comes here illegally.

I think all of the illegal-immigrant protesters should be protesting in Mexico! Why is it the U.S.'s responsibility to take care of them? If they have a problem with treatment, they should look to their home country. I think it is a slap in the face of every LEGAL immigrant. I know lots of legal immigrants from Mexico, and Ireland, and they are furious about it.

First of all, there is nothing racist about wanting to secure our borders. The very definition of a Sovereign State is one that is capable of controlling its borders.

The U.S. has, in effect, the equivalent of a million first round NFL draft picks. There are millions of very well educated people all over the world who want to live in the U.S., and we're passing them over for endless waves of mainly unskilled workers pouring across the Mexican border. Is that any way to run a country?

Aren't we doing Mexicans a disservice? By relieving the pressure on their government to fix the rampant corruption which keeps Mexico poor, we condemn the rest of their country to perpetual economic misery. If Mexicans were forced to stay in their own country, they would soon force the government to reform the bribery and corruption that prevents their economy from flourishing.

The pro-illegal crowd is racist. How? They encourage illegal entry into the U.S., which means these undocumented workers are condemned to live on the margins of society, below radar. Their lives are impoverished in many ways because of their illegal status.

Liberals don't consider that part of the picture. Liberals just want to feel all warm and fuzzy. They want to be able to brag, "Oh, we're so altruistic and kind to the less fortunate." The hell they are! They are simply perpetuating the underclass status of these people in perpetuity.

Legal immigrants are welcome, but illegal immigrations are not! Do we let the entire world come to the USA? What makes their plight worse or better than anyone group of persons around the world. To answer your question; the racist-pro illegal is worse.

I have no problem with legal immigrants. If they pay their taxes and carry their load, that's fine. I do have a problem with my taxes being used to support people who are not even citizens of the country. I think everyone should should contribute their share and not depend on someone else for a hand out.
