dont
most people want to put their own touch on a house - if it is newly decorated they can almost feel obliged not to re-decorate. Furthermore, its obvious when a house has been newly decorated: smell; no marks on walls; no chips on woodowrk etc.
I would be very suspicious of someone having just painted their house - this can be a way to mask cracks, damp etc.
obviously if the place is like a pigsty then go ahead - would definitely improve your position.
the best thing though is to tidy up, wash walls and woodwork down, get the carpets cleaned. box up every bit of tat you have on shelves etc. leave the place minimal and sparse - it will make it look larger and more contemporary, airy etc.
put flowers in the kitchen - make it feel like a home you want to come back to after work.

First surveyors would recommend redorating as it increases the value of the house, usually by a couple of thousand of pounds. Plus many people dont really have the time when they first move in to do it for them self's, so they tend to move into houses that are ready to live into straight away and slowly remake the home theres. I would do it if you can as it really does befit you, use neutral colours and if you have seen on TV this can be done quite cheap, but remember the more you put into something the more you get out . So maybe by spending around one/two thousand on your house will give the new buyer a look they can live with and you extra money from the sale. Good luck.

You obviously don't watch House Doctor with the American
lady Ann Maurice. She does not spend a fortune but just clears
away all the clutter and paints over bright or garish colours to to
give a neutral out look. Some of the houses she looks at have been on the market for a year and she spends about £2000 to £3000 and in a week the house is sold.So it speaks for itself
unless your house is already in tip top order.

Many times, people will redo a much older house to something a little more track home style so it's easier to sell. I.e. to get rid of wood paneling on the walls (from the 70's).
Updating a kitchen is the most beneficial way to make a larger investment. Granite counter tops are the quickest way to add money to your resale of a house, also people will add bathrooms to make an extra "master unit" which is REALLY desirable right now with the baby boomers getting older and moving their parents in. Another thing people are starting to do is retrofit their house to meet ADA requirements, or to make their house easily convertible for someone with a wheel chair, because like I said, baby boomers are starting to realize they aren't going to get younger and they're starting to take care of their parents

The reason behind this is to improve the value of the house...EG
My brother bought a house two years ago in a small town of 700, and it cost $85,000 and they have renovated the kitchen, bathroom and other small bits and pieces costing $30,000 +/- and now they are putting the house up for sale for $230,000 and they expect to get $220,000. Now the increase in house value would not have bought it up to this sort of increase they had the house valued at each stage and the renovations have added about $80,000 worth of value!
The real key when renovating for profit is to be very plain - don't pick outlandish colors or schemes - pick neutral ones that people are more likely to appreciate.

If people see a badly decorated, cluttered house, they will be turned off. Clean it up, add fresh paint and fix obvious flaws and you will have an easier sale.

To improve its appearance so that people will offer higher bids. The problem is, people lack vision, so if the house isn't ship shape, they can't picture it another way. I suggest watching "Sell This House" on HGTV. It's very informative.
