Depression takes on many forms. I have been suffering from depression for many years but was not treated for it until about 2 years ago. There are so many symptoms, tierd, cranky, not wanting to be around other people (even your friends and family), things you use to enjoy no longer interest you, every day seems like the last day that you worked so hard to get through etc. I was lucky enough that I got to a point where I found a great Doctor that worked with different meds. until he found what worked for me, and with the help of a councilor who I talked to, was able to get me back to the person I was before. There are great Drs. and Great meds. to help with this. Don't let it go on as long as I did. Get help now. It's easy. Just take that first step and tell them exactly how you are feeling. I know you can do it, I did. I wish you all the luck in the world and God Bless.

Depression is when you are sad/upset more than usual. You can be depressed for various reasons, such as a death in the family, but there is also depression caused by a chemical imbalance, where your brain is reabsorbing certain chemicals too much. This results in being sad about lots of different things, many of which aren't really that bad but to you they are. It can cause low self-esteem, not wanting to do the things you used to enjoy, not being hungry or being very hungry, among other things.

If you think you may have depression, there is nothing to be ashamed of. Go talk to a doctor about how you are feeling, and there are different ways to treat it. Good luck!

To me, being depressed, in many cases today, is being too lazy or incompetent to handle your problems, and depression is an excuse that people make up so that other people and medicines can do what they should be responsible for in the first place.
I quote one of my very favorite MAD TV skits based on depression and phsycological illness, "STOP IT!"

It means that most days I can't even get out of bed. I have no interest in anything. I just want to crawl into a hole. At its worst I wanted to end my life. When I did get up I didn't get dressed and just sat in my recliner all day, with my cat on my lap. Thank God for medication, therapy and my precious kitty. I know she knew something was wrong with me. She spent an inordinate amount of time on my lap, helping me to heal.

It means having a hopelessness about your life and your future...often you feel paralyzed (not physically, but mentally) and unable to function normally. Sometimes you feel like you just wantn to die. It's a terrible thing!
