I went to look in on the babies kittens and my neice was standing there looking too and we thought we heard the babies spit or hiss at us. Usually when I look in on them they just look back at me and sometimes I take them out and let them move around a little. The mother cat muffers she don't mind as long as it is me and her. Do the babies have a defense mechanism like spitting or hissing at 3 weeks old?

Yes, it's hysterical. I do cat rescue work and we brought in 3 teeny tiny orange tabbies the other day. They were strays and not used to humans. As soon as you put your hand near them, they'd give these silent hisses. Even as they were dozing off, if they sensed your hand coming in they'd wake up and hiss. LOL...scary!

Yes, they don't use it very often, but it is there. It's adorable to see a tiny kitten hiss and smack at something. They think they're tough, but at their age and size, their bite is the ''worst'' they can do. lol

Yes I think so. I have a picture of a kitten doing that I think. They just aren't ready to trust you yet I think

Yep, it's an automatic response to fear. It's too cute, too! They can do that before their little ears and eyes open, too, because of a strange smell.
