I don't feel nervous about it, but I know at times when I've gone to a new place to workout, you feel unsure about the people there until you've been around them awhile.
Other people might feel uncomfortable about their bodies in such a place, particularly amongst those that have taken better care of themselves. Ever notice how the gym makes people wear things they probably shouldn't be wearing?

I'm a personal trainer and come across this all the time. It is natural to for people to be nervous, whether it's going to the gym for the first time, starting a new job, a course, anything. Just get a fitness instructor from the gym to give you an introduction to the machines and maybe get a fitness magazine that will give you a few tips on the weights. What you'll quickly notice is that half the people in the gym don't really know what they are doing and are in the same boat as you, and the other half are either too dedicated and into their training to notice or are just too into themselves to notice coz they spend half their time looking in the mirror at themselves! A couple of sessions and you won't even think twice about it.

I went to a gym for 4 years and I never had that problem, but at our gym there is a seperate equipment room for people that aren't comfortable working out in the main gym room. I like that is a good idea.

Thats what most of us have done-waited untill we are big and fat to go to the gym.Who gos to the gym in great shape! So the thing to do when you get to the gym is to seek out the big ones-the really big ones-hang with them- that way you won't feel so bad about yourself!Plus for a added attention-when they do 1 pushup-you knock out 2-you'll catch a eye that way for sure.Have fun!

I get nervous sometimes, I'll admit. I have a pudgy tummy I am working hard to get rid of, but some of the exercises are hard and i think I look awkward doing them. So I stick with the cardio machines and the cruch blaster. I totally understand that lady.

A good idea would be to have an 'open day' regularly. For an hour or so, the public are welcome to come. They are given a tour of the place, personally meet the staff and shown how one or two of the machines work. Reservation needed of course.

Yeah, I hate going when the gym is full. I hate that people stare at you while you're working out. It's creepy.

i go to the gym in my college all the time and it never occurred to me that some people are afraid to go in there, i mean i see allot of fat, ugly, old people go in there and nobody makes fun of them or anything. i might help them if they are with friends or at least with someone they can talk to so that they wont pay attention to the people around them.

Sometimes it is good to go with a good friend, this way you are with someone you trust and you may feel a bit more comfortable.
