You are able to stop answering. My quote generator broke down, and I am now fixing it. I will switch a quote it comes with with a Shakespeare quote.
A wretched soul, bruised with adversity,
We bid be quiet when we hear it cry;
But were we burdened with like weight of pain,
As much or more we should ourselves complain.

You named off my favorites (except The Stand is still one of the best books that I have ever read)! Now for what else I am into..... If you are not above reading what your ten-year-old might be into, I loved Eragon & Eldest (fantasy LOTR type) The Harry Potter series (Yeah, I know I'm too old but I liked 'em anyway) For the grown-up list: Michael Crichton (author of Jurassic Park, many other really great stories) Robin Cook (medical thrillers) Arthur C. Clarke Isaac Asimov (The Foundation Trilogy was my first, but all so far have been good even though I am not primarily into sci-fi) Vonnegut was an excellent suggestion, too, btw. Sorry I have such a short list, but I've been dealing with the same issues myself. Good luck!

How do I change?
If I feel depressed I will sing.
If I feel sad I will laugh.
If I feel ill I will double my labour.
If I feel fear I will plunge ahead.
If I feel inferior I will wear new garments.
If I feel uncertain I will raise my voice.
If I feel poverty I will think of wealth to come.
If I feel incompetent I will think of past success.
If I feel insignificant I will remember my goals.
