Pine straw are pine leaves that have died and fallen off of Pine Trees mostly found in the Southern states of the U.S.A. The pine leaves break off of the trees, and fall on the ground, called "pine straw". No, they are not bad, just frustrating to gather up when you go to mow your lawn. If you don't pick the leaves up, it might just clog up your lawnmower. Plus, if they are on the ground, it doesn't look necessarily aesthetic (beautiful) for your landscaping. Trust me, I live here.

Pine straw, in Georgia at least, are pine needles. In the south there are tons of pine trees. It is a cheap way to add a little class to your lawn. It is used kinda like wood chips.
Is it bad? In some cases, yes. When you simply have a lot of pine trees it covers over grass and keeps your lawn from growing if you are not constantly blowing it off. Even worse, it comes from an evergreen which means they drop needles all year long!

Pine straw is dried pine needles. Many people, especially in the southern US use it in place of mulch for landscaping.
I've never heard anything bad about it....
