I am an at home mom who needs to make money but refuses to leave my baby!! I am currently watching one child of someone elses and we have remodeled our "mother-in-law suite so I can watch about 4 more and not be in the house. I have searched the internet to find out, but have yet to find if I require a license to watch these children. I definately want to do this, its been my dream forever!! I have experience with early education with disabled children etc... sorry just giving my background so nobody tries to discourage me cause I love this job!

HI! Dependent upon which state you reside in (assuming you are in the USA) and the county within that state will determine if a license is required. I ran a day care for 8 years in my home and where I live it was required to have a license. This allows protection for both the provider and the children with which you care for. I would reccomend calling your county governement office. Start by looking in the blue pages of your telephone book (usually in front of the white pages) and look under licensing.

It is an awesome profession and the rewards of watching children grow and flourish in your care is bar-none one of the best feelings. I have children who I used to care for that are now married with kids of their own and they thank me for how they were cared for because they instill some of my rearing techniques on their children now.

Good luck!

Call your Social Service office in your area and they can tell you who to contact. Be prepared if you have to have a license because they are very picky about your house. I know cause I went through that and its a pain. I started out with 6 kids and then I went down to 3. I had more trouble with the parents then the state. Please check into really good and if that is your dream then GO FOR IT!! GOOD LUCK!!!

It probably depends on your state, but in Ohio you can watch up to six without a license. Your own children under the age of six count in that number also.

Good Luck! You are probably Ok with 5 but the laws will probably differ from state to state.
