Ok, yesterday, I stopped for gas. While waiting in line to pay, this mother walked in with her daughter...the mother was overweight, but the kid (maybe 8 or 9) probably weighed twice as much as the mother. She already had ice cream smeared all over her face and while her mom bought a pack of cigarettes, the kid proceded to get a donut, a bag of pork rinds and a snickers bar. What is wrong with parents like this?

If the mother was doing her job and worrying about the kids weight, I wouldn't have to ask this question. So...either you are a fat kid or you have one...LOL!

I KNOW ITS NUTS!!
I'm a nutritionist, so I work with these people first hand. where I live 60% of our 4 year olds are obese! I cant believe that people feed there kids this garbage, then refuse to admit they have a weight problem!
you have no idea how many 10-12 year olds (that are over weight) come in because there parents think they are too thin!
most people have no idea how to properly feed there children (or themselves) they start babys on food before 6 months, they force feed there toddlers, and they give junk food to there children.
people you child should have eaten 5 vegetables yesterday and nothing (or one serving) of a food that came from a can or a box, how many people can say that they did this? you are the parent you need to take charge!

In the situation that you had just described, it's very clear that you yourself 'know' the problem BUT it may be possible that the mother and child concerned are NOT aware of their weight problem, or maybe that both of them 'just don't care' about their being overweight. This is very reflective of the millions of Americans today who have overweight problems and are just too ignorant or complacent of their condition.
I can say that such parents who already have weight issues in their families, must come into terms with their weight problems and must take a proactive step to control their weight and that of the eating habits of their own children. The issue here is much more than their 'eating lifestyle' but also involves their emotional and psychological well-being.
For us parents who are within the 'desired' weight range, must be very careful not too be judgmental towads such people. Yes, we can see that they have such weight problems, and we know somehow how to keep ourselves 'fit' but people who are struggling or battling with their weight problems, may not altogether 'like' what is happening to them. In some cases, being overweight is already considered a diseas or a health condition that had been passed on genetically in one family. In other cases, some people who 'used to be fit' had become all of a sudden overweight, because of a traumatic period in their life, that affected them emotionally. And thus, as a result, had resorted to eating as an outlet.
But for parents who already know that they have weight issues in their family, should take control of their lives. This may involve the help of professionals (doctors, dieticians, etc) to help them succeed in their fight against obesity. And it only makes sense, that healthy eating should be encouraged.

This is a hard situation to deal with on one hand your children see skinny women on magazines, tv, movies, singers, etc. The image that they portray to our youth is shameful, eating disorders everywhere, and on the other hand, you dont want them to think that it is ok not to care about what they look like....As a parent myself the balance is a difficult one, but I have to say that it is the parents that is to blame, you know when your child has had "enough" to eat. Especially foods like that, but you have to also look at the source, the parent was just as large and buying cigarettes in front of the kid, so go figure....it is not up to us as a society to raise a child it is up to the PARENTS! I know I would not take advice from society on how to raise my child other than my husband or I as we know what is best for our children and as sad as it may seem that mother also thinks the same. So again hard questionto ask as well as hard to answer!

My daughter is not but alot of kids in her school are severely overweight, one child at her birthday party ate 5 slices of pizza. This child was 10. Parents need to get a grip on their child's eating habits and teach them portion control and healthy choices before this world is full of 500 pound 30 yearolds collecting social security because they are so large checking the mail would give them a heart attack.

There's the problem of overweight all over the world, and of course it starts from the childhood creating bad habits.
We all have to start having better feed habits ourself, so we can teach our daugthers and sons, and maybe show some people around us, how good habits are good to our healt.
That's the problem, the kids are just learning what growns up do, so, it would be good to stop having coffee and donuts for breakfast, and making only one meal.

Wow, I'm sorry that you feel that overweight people are ruining this country's image as opposed to a moronic president, crime, drugs, etc. You are very shallow and should be focusing on other things, let the mother of that child worry about her weight.

I think they should be imprissoned. This is a form of child neglect and child abuse and child endagerment. This should not be allowed. Some people just have medical problems, but this child clearly has an eating problem 1 mouth, 2 hands and 24 hours. I am feeling your pain right now.

Those people who said it's not your concern are the one's with the fat kids that they can't control. Shame on them. That mother should be charged with neglect and her daughter should be sent to a fat camp.

It is none of your concern. It may not be right in your eyes (or mine) but, that is why the woman is the Mother. Not you, Do not judge others.
