After a war, the winning country leaves service members there in ensure that the conditions of the surrender and other agreements are met and maintained. We stay due to strategic location (Germany/England/Italy during the Cold War), and because the countries want us there. We, the US Gov't, supply a ready job market for local nationals, and this assists the economy of the foreign government.

We do not have foreign military bases in the US, because 1) We have not lost a battle with a foreign military on our soil, and 2) because we have the world's strongest military. While we don't have their bases, we DO host/train their soldier, sailors and airmen.

England was an allied of the USA therefore wanted us there for strategic bombing of Germany during WW2. After the axis countries signed their surrender we took over some of their territory while disarming them due to the laws of the "unconditional surrender". Now the countries want us there or we wouldn't be there.

1st, the majority of our foreign bases in Europe are NATO bases, and part of an alliance organization.

2nd, those bases we have on the soil of foreing non NATO nations are there at the invite of the host nation to keep them safe from bad people, like our bases in Japan protect from China and Russia, and are also a left-over from ww2.

Troops are stationed in countries that have either been defeated in war or asked for a presence of American forces by treaty, no one has defeated us and we don't need foreign troops for our protection. There are foreign troops in America training with U,S, forces tho.

All of the places you mentioned WANT us there and we are there with their permission. Why? Because we are the first people they turn to for help if their freedom is threatened and they know that we will stand up for democracy.
