I don't think there is a doubt that racism still exists, but I also believe that it is not as widespread as it was 30 years ago. Most people have grown, and tend to be more accepting of other races and cultures. However you will always have pockets of racism. Whether it is due to upbringing or ignorance doesn't matter because it is ugly. Racism should never be tolerated in any form, the simple fact is that we are all brothers under the skin, and we all bleed red if you cut us.
I have to disagree with Ticklish about growing up racist. I grew up in East Texas in the 60's and 70's. Racism was very present in those days. It was not unusual to hear members of my own family using racial slurs in everyday conversation. I always found this disturbing and vowed from an early age that I would never be like that.

um.. there will always be Racism and Discrimination... there's no way around it cause it's human nature. I mean how many people have not made a race joke or a retarded joke in their life or not laughed at one. I mean some people are worse than others and take it to a whole new level of wrong but asides that... there's nothing we can do to stop it. Sad but true. I mean even if it was like a "Hail Hitler" paradise they would find something else to differentiate from each other and then use that as an "I'm better than you" stand point.

I think it's not as widespread as many years ago, but unfortunately it is still present in our society.
I think many of our lives have been touched by multi cultural influence..on the job, in our personal lives, through marriage and friendships we have made (or our friends have made). Over time the narrowmindedness of racism has been 'bred' out of most of us...(figuratively speaking).
There are way more people who accept everyone's right to life, (a universal human courtesy in an evolved society), than there are those who are racist, but over focusing on the racist populace feeds into the generalizing going on about the amount of people in our world who are pre-disposed to racism and the amount of racism we have to tolerate in our own lives and in the world.
The bottom line is...it's about people wanting to be better than others...plain and simple...let's face it, whatever takes the focus off the real issue serves it's own purpose...which is to take the focus off of the real issue, the human things like snobbery and greed...not skin color or spiritual beliefs.

Uh huh! Uh, yeeahhh! Have you been to Charleston, South Carolina lately? Walked into an all white bar with your black self? Walked into an all black beauty salon with your white self? Walked into a board room with the leadership falling on you while you look different from everyone sitting around the table? Uh, yeah and one's race doesn't make them racist or non-racist. Some of the worst instances I have experienced have been from older black people questioning my ability because they don't trust that I have the experience and credentials to give them excellent service. I've been called a ni***** three times by people who didn't want me in their neighborhood. I am a professional Realtor(r) and we were just given the statistic that after a study was conducted by HUD volunteers and officers, 87% of the Realtors(r) discriminated ~ which is illegal. One of my best friends is a white girl engaged to a black man. Both college educated, loving, saved professionals. Her Daddy and Grandma liked to had a fit and a half when she brought him home. But she's bold and smart like that and knows love knows no color. Heck yeah, My Sister....it is still alive.

Racism is very much alive. I still see a lot of African Americans using the "it's because I'm black" excuse for everything. Fortunately, over here, that excuse has become less and less effective.

It is. Interestingly, racism is not apparent among adults who were exposed to other races at a very young age. Which means there is an assurance that different races aren't a threat.
I think if the parents are racist, the children would be one too.

I not only believe that it is, I know that it is. It is very sad that people cannot get along and that something as simple as the color of our skin can drive us apart. I personally know people who are racist, and the unfortunate part is that they realize that they are and do not do anything about it. We need to be more accepting of our differences and then there would be less pain and suffering in the world. We also need to get over the past, slavery is over here, WWI and WWII are over, we need to forgive and get on with living rather than seeking reparations and revenge.
Zaki1968- I have experienced it also which is sad and painful.

I believe racism is, and always will be present in society. Even if your not racist, your still predjudiced against some faction of society. Whether it be hicks, hillbillies, socialites, trailer park folks, suburbanites, thugs, rappers, or rock and roll bands. We are all predjudice.
