I have to start with "better me". That is a long process, but if there is no "better me", there is no "better planet".

Instead of bringin my lunch in plastic baggies, I bought reusable tupperware that I wash every night. Also I use reusable cups and mugs at work for drinks. I ride my bike places that I can. I drive very little and I don't use the AC, but I roll the windows down instead. I have a Low Emissions car and I would like to buy a hybrid when I can afford it. I don't use AC in my house either, just open the windows. If I have a lot of errands to go on, I try to do them all in one day so I drive less and I map out the route to end at the grocery store. Also, I am a social worker so I am trying to help people in their lives and help them find the resources that they need. I am friendly and I don't litter. I don't smoke and I buy locally. I hold doors for people and I say "hello" and smile to passerbys. I spend time with my family and I am always trying to better myself.

I've volunteered (Big Sisters, donate blood, etc.) and done the civic thing(s). But every day, I try to be a good person, to not only treat others as I want to be treated, but go out of my way to make connection with other people - such as looking them in the eye and smiling. In our technological age, we seem to be losing human contact and I think it's easy to lose our sense of community and humanity. And that's where problems arise, when people feel disconnected and shut out, they tend to do bad things. Is that too simple and idealistic? Well, it's something we can all afford the time and cost to do every day, but many of us don't. At least it's something we don't have any excuse for not doing.

Local volunteer for scholarship students in northern Mexico. Our organization raises money to support 50 students each year so that they may go on to high school and college. All the anti-immigration wonks should know that more jobs and higher education lessens the flow of undocumented workers to the US. Those kids we support will be the leaders in the bright future of the state.

Good question. I have embraced conservatism and personally supported countless young mentees and causes in that vein, and will continue to do so as long as I live. I have SERVED my country in wartime, unlike most gutless liberals. I have worked personally for one of the highest-ranking military (and later civilian) people in U.S. history. To name a FEW!
