At the time the Spanish arrived in the area now known as Mexico, it was a loosely held empire made up of a group of city-states (called altepetls). Each of these altepetls probably had its own language or dialect. The ruling group at the time was a group now called the Mexica, supposedly the group from which Mexico got its name. These folks spoke the precursor of the Nahuatl language. Mexican Spanish now has many Nahuatl words in it, which is responsible for some of the vocabulary differences between Mexican Spanish and other dialects of Spanish. There are still quite a number of different cultural groups and different langauges spoken in Mexico. You can learn more about it at the website of the Museo Nacional de Antropología (National Museum of Anthropology). And, if you're ever in Mexico City, I highly recommend that you visit the museum.

The Hispanics of Mexico today are actually descendants of both the native Indians that lived in the area (Mayans and Incas) and the Spanish invaders, I believe that the Indian tribes each had their own native tongue, and the Spanish of Mexico is a hybrid of Spanish from Spain and those Native tongues. (Much like English in Texas isn't quite like English anywhere else)

There were actually many different languages spoken by the native indians. The general name of the languages spoken is called Quechuan (pronounced: catch oo an) One specific dialect I know of the top of my head is called (and this is probably spelled wrong! sorry) Nao'hitl. I hope this helps. You could just search "inca languages" or aztec or any of the other indian natives of South America to find out more.

There were actually several different Indian tribes in Mexico. While the languages were sometimes similar, they each had their differences.

The most famous tribe would be probably the Aztecs, who were still around when the Spaniards invaded. They called themselves the Mexicas and they had been taking over the neighboring tribes.

There are different regions in Mexico. Mayans where in south East, in the central and north region were the Aztecs mainly, but at the same time different indigenous groups were around the country,so there must be more than 20 different indigenous languages. In some regions (mountains mainly) they keep speaking those indigenous languages and spanish.

The entire connected continent was Indian territory, yet the Indians that we know as Indians today, are not from India, the english thought they had reached India, and therefore named them Indians. What ever tribes were located in Mexico, they spoke their native languages.
