He is still learning how to make the sounds he hears in his environment, he's not even trying to consciously make real words yet. Don't worry, he's just learning now...he'll get there! He's probably in a transitional babbling stage, using repetition and learning to shift intonation, etc. Around, or a few months after, his first birthday, he should be starting to come up with one-word productions.
Babies have so much to learn about our language in such a short time, just keep talking and reading to him, and enjoy every moment!

I have found that my children and my grandchildren always said other words before they ever said mama and the reason I think this is, is because mama is the first one to respond to them. They have to call dada to get a response from him but mama always comes running. You cannot make them say something they are not ready to say but have heart that the reason behind it is because they trust you to always be there if there is a problem.

Unfortunately, mama is one of the last baby words that he will say. Dada, baa baa, by by are easy words for his mouth to form. M, P, S, are harder consonants for the learning mouth to say. Isn't that just how it goes. We do all the work and still get no credit. Seriously, give it time and he will say it. Just know in your heart that you are the most important thing in his life and it will come in due time.

Just keep saying it. Repitition is how he will learn, If you tell him to say "mama" and point to you all the time..eventually he will catch on..it does take time though. You know how kids are..they won't do much of anything on your time...but he will learn..I promise!

babies learn by repetition and they will jump from consanant to consanant, b words, then d words etc...at 9 months he is repeating sounds he has heard and learning he has a voice, saying 'mama' isn't far off and he will say it, with time.

All you can do is keep saying it over and over. Refer to yourself as mama, such as "Can mama have....." or "Mama loves you". Eventually he'll get it.
