my housecat was MIA outdoors for about 6-7 hrs... now he was been under the bed, instead of his usual spot in the windowsill and just generally staying away from us.. though he is not a 'lap' 'type cat, I thought nothing of this. I tried to pet him and he cried at me, and hiss when I tried to lift him ..I'm not sure if he is injuried or mad at me?! He seems to be walking w/ a very slight limp on r front leg,, could this be a pulled muscle, that will heal itself, should wait it out or take him to vet for possibly something serious??

Update - thank you everyone for your input. Bandit seems to be back to his normal self and maybe just had a case of the "wild animal " fever. I dunno - but I his vet check up is coming up soon..

I would take it to a vet if it is limping. It makes sense for him to be behaving exactly that way if he is injured. Cats are very "tense" critters. I am guessing that the stress of being outside and in whatever bad situation he may have encountered is causing this behavior.

Take him to the vet right away for the limp. If he was bitten in a fight he could have an infection. This might be what's causing the hissing. Usually if a cat has been mistreated he will hiss because he is afraid. I got a cat that was already 8 years old and really had issues LOL. Hissing all the time. I kept touching her anyways. Now she sleeps next to me and never hisses. She still won't be friends with my younger cat but a lot of love, affection and attention is making her more trusting.
Pick the cat up from the neck (even though they don't like this) and put her down in front of you with her back to you and quickly start rubbing her under the ears and on top of her head. If you do this all the time she will learn to trust you again.

his reactions seen more like he has been injured than he's just mad. See if you can get him out from under the bed carefully, or place some favorite food close enough to entice him to come out. Do a visual look over, and gently run your hands around on his body, if you hit a area where he has an instant response, then he has probably been hurt there. If you have to be little more firm in your resolve to check him out, have someone help hold him while you look at him, or try wrapping him in a towel, so that he can not bite or scratch you. Injured animals are scared, in shock and will lash out at anyone who comes near. You may want to see about just getting him to a vet and letting them deal with it, as they could give him something to relax him so that they can do a through exam. And if you have concerns don't wait, the longer you delay, if something is wrong, the worse it can get. Good luck to you

I suspect your cat has been in a fight. Fights can get very nasty and the cat can return with painful scratches and bites. Often it's hard to see these wounds so I would suggest taking him to the vet as soon as possible. It's much cheaper in the long run. If one of the wounds gets swollen with pus, the cost of the treatment will be proportionate to the size of the swelling.

He might be sick or injured. I'd personally take him to the vet to make sure he's okay.

My male cat is so over-sensitive that when something changes in his world or upsets him, he throws a hissy fit. Literally. He hisses at whomever for no reason and then gives this God-awful half meow, half growl.

every time my cat went missing for a few hours, and came back acting like that he was injured from a fight. he's just prob. resting up after a scuffle with some other animal. if you can't see any injuries i'd leave him alone for a day, and passively observe his actions. if he's still behaving like that in 24hrs, then he needs a vet. he can't talk, so his only way to tell you he's hurting is hissing, and secluding himself.

Perhaps something happened when he was away that upset it. Give it some time and watch his behaviour. If it doesn't get better or you notice signs of injury take him to the vet.

Your cat has been abused. It's really sad. Take kitty to the vet, and get his advice on kitty's recent behaviour. Give kitty time space and love. Best wishes.
