Usually a college pre-residence form will be sent to you to obtain your "likes and dislikes profile" to match you with another room mate if you do not know anyone attending your school. ...or sometimes there is a space for comments to request a room mate that may be a Friend. It is up to the college to make the final decision for a new incoming student. (..also depends on lead time given and space available.) In following years at the same institution of higher learning, most students are usually given a chance to request a "roomy" or dorm location. This takes the stress of allocating roommates off residence life officials and the unknown as to whether the grouping anonymously again will work out during the term. At my son's college in MA, students earn points during a term by community service and can block a group of Friends to room with and near. Then a "lucky"lottery is set up to assign numbers to give the lowest number first pick of their dorm choices.....Many colleges work it differently....you can either visit the website of your school of choice or call directly for a bit of info....I wish you well...Good luck!!!

Usually not in your first year when you get there. However, after the first semester after you make some friends you can talk to your RA about different arrangements.
Unless you have a friend that is entering the college too, then you should make the request for each other on your housing form.

Yes you can. However most people don't. The main reason being that living with someone is completely different than being friends with someone. Many friendships have turned into ugly fights.
So be careful.

Normally they are assigned however, if you get hooked up with someone to want to room with go in together and request it. Peace.
