Most diefic pantheons (the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Babylonians, and yes, Hebrews) can be traced to modifications of an older civilization's belief system. Each of these, in turn, can be trace to the oldest known civilization on Earth, the Sumerians. The others pretty much just took the Sumerian's beliefs about their gods, and changed the names, and shuffled them around a little bit. (In the case of the Hebrews, they started out as polytheistic, but eventually evolved into a monotheistic belief system, as you know).
The Sumerians, who lived 6000 years ago, believed that their gods lived on a red planet that circled the sun on a huge eliptical orbit. In other words, their gods were aliens. Interestingly enough, NASA actully found a red planet matching this decription last year. It should be back in our neighborhood in about 1000 years or so. Maybe the gods are still on it.
As a side note, the person who identified the Nephilim from Genesis 6 was correct in a way. The Nephilim was the name given to the rank-and-file Sumerian gods, and the stories from Genesis were directly plagerized from the older Sumerian stories. However, the Great Flood did not destroy the Nephilim. According to the Sumerian story, the Nephilim left Earth when they knew the Flood was coming, and left humanity to die. But one of the gods had a change of heart, and saved humanity (hence the Ark story). After the Flood, the Nephilim returned to Earth. But later, as their planet's eliptical orbit took it farther and farther from Earth, they stopped hanging around. Supposedly, they'll be back.

Gods rock. I have bucket's full of 'em. Here's some "secret" gnostic info...
There is practically no almighty god, only many gods and goddesses. The universe and everything beyond the universe is in a state of total anarchy. Gods are powerful celestial beings (aka angels), some are universal (extraterrestrials), some are anti-material (extra-universal). [newer gnosis => Each planet has a god, each solar system has one, each galaxy, and each universe. Magnitude of the celestial hierarchy staggers the human mind. Trillions upon trillions of inhabited planets, uncountable universes, etc. Anarchy because advanced minds do not control other minds. Oh, there may be a supreme mind (almighty god) but no being has ever seen it and there is no proof anywhere. Humans perceive celestial beings as "gods". Monotheism was a step backward. Jesus taught polytheism but they killed him for it.

Gods are good spirits and guardian angels. They are above and around you and protect you if you are a good person. They cannot stay near a bad person. A good person is someone who never has ill manners or ill thoughts against others.

Plural? As in Greco-Roman?
Some teach that they are the "Nephilim" of Genesis 6; which means they were destroyed in the Flood of Noah.
