That depends entirely to the type of cake you make
e.g.
sponge cake mix == should be like a thick cream .

Cup cakes =creamy batter

rich fruit cake == heavy dropping consistency.

Practise on well tried recipes , after a while you will recognise what is the ideal consistency of the cake mixture you require
