First, I would try looking at the normal places to see if she's registered. You can usually do that from your computer. Try, Target, Wal-Mart, Linens n Things, Bed Bath and Beyond, Dillards, Foleys, and after that I'd give up and ask if she's registered. It might look like you spent more time on it if you just looked first, but there's no shame in asking. If she says she's not registered, I'd find a nice gift card for one of those places, even if they already have everything, you can never have too many sheets or towels, and a woman can always want to update some kitchen product, etc. I think for a co-worker $20-$40 would be a nice price for a gift.

I don't like giving gift cards. I think they are impersonal. How much is "not too expensive, but not too cheap?" A champagne bucket from Tiffany's is a nice gift, as are wedding picture frames from department stores. You could also get something simple (a nice crystal bowl, a set of fun glassware) in the price range you want from any store that gives gift receipts - that way they can exchange it for whatever they want.

Try doing a little leg work. If you have the bride's e-mail address, e-mail her and apologize that you can't make it, but that you'd like to know where she is registered so that you can send a gift instead. Or, take some time and look at the places that people commonly register - Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Target, Linens N Things, Bed Bath & Beyond, the May Company Stores (Filenes, Foleys, Robinsons May, etc), and such. See if they have a wedding website on TheKnot.com or theweddingchannel.com - this may link to their registries.

Gift cards and cash are so - unpersonal !!!!

What is wrong with everyone today ? Do people really care so little that the "easiest gift" for the giver is now the rule ?

What about..... things that are personal to the bride and groom ? a birdbath, toaster, blender, a beautiful clock - and if you don't know them that well - what about a... toaster, blender, clock... or something else that you would find helpful in starting a new life together... how about a picnic basket... a basket of bath goodies... a set of spices in decorative bottles.... a great new pan... or a set of wine glasses and a bottle of good wine...

Show that you CARE a little !!! I mean gift cards and cash are just soooooooooooooooooooooooooo dull. Shows YOU have no creativity or caring !!!

Besides - in a cash or gift card the amount you spend is RIGHT THERE.... if you shop some - you can get a really nice present on sale sometimes and then how much you spend is not so apparent.

A gift card to her favorite restaurant/store is an excellent choice! That way she can buy whatever she wants/needs. If you don't know her favorite store, get her a gift card to stores where people shop the most like Target and Walmart. If you get her a gift card to Olive Garden (which is the most popular restaurant gift card), then it gives her and her husband a chance to eat out when they don't feel like cooking. I personally don't want to buy things off the registry because it doesn't guarantee that the couple will use them or if the items will be sitting on the shelf or they might even resell it or give it away. And I personally don't like giving just cash because it is very tempting to blow it off instead of spending it wisely. This is why a gift card is an excellent choice and they will appreciate it more!
You can buy discounted gift cards on eBay. They are cheaper than buying them directly from the stores. But hurry, they sell fast!

Check Penney's and Sears. You can always play it safe and get a small tools set and little tool box. She can claim it as her fix it kit for the house or he can take it the the garage. Either way you've made at least one of them happy. Craftsman tools are always a good option and very few people think to get them because they are thinking kitchen stuff and towels. A fire extinguisher is also a great idea!!

Are there other co-workers that are invited? If so, ask them if they know where she's registered. Or just ask the bride yourself. Everybody came up to me and asked where I was registered, it's no big deal. You don't want to get her something that she doesn't want, that's annoying.
