Because they're imps! he-he
Both a cat and dog will roll around to dry off. They'll also do it to get rid of the shampoo smell and get a more natural smell.
They both depend on how an animal smells to identify it so having a shampoo smell just doesn't smell right to them!
I just washed my two before I put tick/flea drops on them. After I put the drops on them, they started rolling around. One more then the other but neither one liked the unnatural smell! :)
Try brushing them on a regular basis, you may not have to bathe them as often!
In the meantime, have fun with them and give them a hug for me! :)

Dogs because of their origins! Pack leaders always had a distinctive smell (Strong) so dogs believe that, by rolling themselves in dirt, they will smell like the pack leader! They think they smell ferocious when in fact ... They stink!
I don't know about cats i only studied canine !!!

My personal thought is to piss me off, but in reality I think it's to dry off. As dry as we think they are, their undercoats remain damp for quite some time.

i usually don't let my dogs out till they are ALL dry...of course this means they rub their butts all over my living room rugs, and couch!
