Ichthus is greek for 'fish'. Since Christ sent His disciples out to become 'fishers' of men, the symbol stuck in the early church (100-200 ad) as a representation of the deity of Christ. The symbol later came to denote a fellow believer or follower of Christ. The fish you now see on bumper stickers is what has resulted.

in scansion the 'ictus' is the 'beat' that falls on stressed syllables, giving a line of verse its structure.

Yep, I presume you mean Ichthus. It means 'fish' in Greek, and it is an acronym.

i - iesous (Jesus)
x - xristos (Christ)
th - theou (of God - 'th' is one letter in the Greek)
u - uios (son)
s - soter (saviour)

So, given the loose Greek word order, it is a title: Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour.
